Why I Like to Be Funny With My Students

the importance of being funny in lesson

When I teach Brazilian Portuguese, I try to be a little funny with my students. Humor makes the lesson lighter, more relaxed, and much more enjoyable. When students laugh, they feel comfortable. And when they feel comfortable, they are not afraid to speak or make mistakes. This is very important when learning a new language.

Humor also helps increase attention. A class full of grammar explanations can become tiring, but when a teacher makes jokes or tells funny stories, students naturally pay more attention. Laughter wakes up the brain and keeps the conversation alive.

There is also another important reason: understanding humor in another language is a strong sign of fluency. Jokes depend on culture, double meanings, and timing. When a student understands a joke in Portuguese — or even better, makes one — it means they are not only translating words anymore. They are thinking in the language.

For me, teaching is not only about grammar rules. It is about helping students feel comfortable using the language in real life. If we can laugh together during the lesson, learning becomes easier, more natural, and much more memorable.
